How to Keep Track of Money Owed in Casual Poker Games

In a friendly home game, money owed is easy to lose track of: IOUs, "I'll pay you next week", and players who borrowed chips mid-game. Here's a simple system for tracking who owes what, and keeping it accurate from one game to the next.

  1. 1

Write down every buy-in when it happens

Most disputes start with a buy-in nobody remembers. Record each buy-in and re-buy the moment chips change hands, with the player's name and the amount. A shared app works better than one person's notes, because everyone can see the same record.

  2. 2

Separate cash paid from money owed

In casual games, players often take chips on credit and promise to pay later. Track this explicitly: did they pay cash for the chips, or are they owing it? Chipup records every buy-in, so after the game you only need the final results to know exactly who owes whom.

  3. 3

Record final chip counts before anyone leaves

Each player's result is cash-out minus buy-ins. Count each stack before the player leaves the table and record it straight away. A player who leaves early with uncounted chips is the most common source of money nobody can account for.

  4. 4

Turn results into the fewest possible payments

Instead of everyone paying everyone, net out the results. If Dan is down $40 and Sara is up $40, Dan pays Sara directly. Chipup does this automatically and shows the shortest list of transfers, which makes it far more likely people actually pay.

  5. 5

Keep unpaid debts visible until they're settled

Money owed that isn't paid on the night should stay on record. Chipup keeps unpaid games on the group's unsettled list, so next week everyone can see what's still open. Record who paid once the transfer goes through.

  6. 6

Agree on a settle-up rule for the group

Decide as a group when debts must be cleared, for example before the next game or within a week, and how people pay (cash, bank transfer, payment app). A clear rule plus a shared record removes the awkward reminders.

Tracking money owed comes down to three habits: write everything down as it happens, settle with as few payments as possible, and keep unpaid balances visible until they're cleared. A shared app like Chipup does all three, so friendly games stay friendly.
